BioGenesis was contracted by Serengeti Environmental to provide technical assistance, remediation expertise and chemicals to bioremediate crude oil contaminated soil at a tank farm in the southeast Texas Gulf Coast. Project plans called for the addition of a dry particulate nutrient package and growth medium for microorganisms to be mixed with the soil for bioremediation.

The nature of the cured oil, being a very thick paraffinitic oil, presented problems. Aged oil encrusted gravel, shell, and soil on the surface, and new oil stood several inches deep over parts of the project site. The oil needed to be liquified and dispersed in the soil for bioremediation to proceed. BioGenesis recommended BG-Solv 715 to allow the integration of the microorganism nutrient and growth medium.

The BioGenesis recommended treatment train procedure called for the soil to be tilled and BG-Solv 715 to be applied at 1:20 dilution using a high pressure sprayer at about 120·F.

After allowing a soak time of three hours to overnight on various parts of the project site, no thick oil was found in or on the soil. As a side benefit, product sprayed over the tank and equipment effectively cleaned unsightly oil and dirt and washed it into the soil for bioremediation.

After treatment with BG-Solv 715, the growth and nutrient package was tilled into the soil, easily absorbing and dispersing the liquified hydrocarbons. Bioremediation was successfully completed and the soil was deemed clean after 45 days.
